AirSticks

Overview

This redesign project aims to improve the user experience of AirSticks, a set of digital drumsticks that allow users to create and play music without physically touching a drum set. The core goal is to identify user pain points and develop an intuitive interface design that can enhance the usability, functionality, and accessibility of the product.

The Challenges

The original application Airware is built along with the founders research at SensiLab, Monash University. Beginning as a 'white paper', many features and functionalities were added as the project progresses. However, the features were not organised before adding onto the app. As a result, the original app has the following major shortcomings:

  • Unorganised functionalities and user flow: the functionalities are messy around the application that has no similar user flow.
  • Lack of visual support: the information is listed by the default layout of Apple developer without any visual support that may improve the usability and work efficiency.
  • Pairing with the sticks: AirSticks lack physical feedback mechanisms that drummers are accustomed to when playing traditional drum sets. Therefore, intuitive and simple pairing process is significantly needed.

The Solutions

In response to the founded challenges, the following solutions were generated:

  • Widget functionalities: functionalities are organised with a given access of widgeting a certain functionality from the checklist to match the developers' wide choices of targeted use groups - musicians of many genres.
  • Visual redesign: the user interface is redesigned to contain useful icons, bars, buttons, and libraries in according to the client's requests.
  • Easy pairing: now the users can easily check, disconnect, or pair new sticks by clicking the always-on-display pairing card whenever, and wherever they are in the production.
