Lovell

Personal Project

Overview

‘Lovell’ is a public installation for public spaces, aiming to provide a fun and not-so-serious interactive device for visitors to play with. Users could upload a photo of a memory, write some words for the photo, choose the avatar bubble that best represents them, and then hit ‘yes’ to wake up the magical ‘Love Well’ to get a piece of artwork that is generated based on the information provided, and how they play with the device.

The Challenges

  • Aesthetics: the images generated by the Lovell installation need to be aesthetically pleasing and in line with the overall theme of the project.
  • Prototyping: having no industrial design background makes it time-consuming to experiment different materials and physical structure for the prototype.
  • Technical complexity: the computer vision and algorithms used to generate the images are highly complex and require a significant amount of processing power. Ensuring that the installation runs smoothly without any technical glitches is a major challenge.

The Solutions

  • Aesthetics: to suit the key concept of water well, this project utilised a variety of bubble elements for more realistic concept visualisation, using 3D modelling & sculpting software 'Blender'.
  • Material experiment: with the suggestion of product designers, I experimented many materials to display the potential themes representing different interaction models of the visitors. The chosen materials are abandoned cotton pads, and pink sand stones, aiming to convey a dreamy and romantic vibe before visitors start playing.
  • Technical outcome: the 'lovell' concept is well-defined and analysed with potential technical glitches, a thorough and concise report is conducted and delivered to the developer team.

Indae Hwang, Unit Coordinator
"The project's concept is well rationalised and proposed, and the quality and consistency of prototyping is well approved! Well done! Brilliant start to your path to be a creative technologist!"
